Solar Eclipse of June 30, 1973

Fred Ley

On June 30, 1973 there was a total eclipse of the sun observed mainly across Africa. It was almost the longest totality one can get, about 7.5 minutes. I set up my telescope here in Athens and took a few images of a partially eclipsed sun. Since today marks 31 years from that event, I thought I would share a few images that I took. -Fred

Hi Guys,

Yeah, I set up the equatorial mount and drive and the sun screen accessory. I didn't have an SLR camera with a detachable lens then. So I took the images off of the sun screen. The single "non sun screen" looking image was taken off of the back of the ground glass focusing screen of a Unitron astro-camera. The camera takes 3.25 x 4.25 inch glass plates which were hard to find then and if you found them, it cost a lot. I did use the camera in the 1980's with plastic 3.25 x 4.25 negatives. It is a bit awkward though. -Fred
