OBSERVING NEAR KALAMATA

Greetings and clear skies to all amateur astronomers of Hellas.

 

I have been visiting the "astrovox" site on and off for couple years. I just became a member.

 

I will be visiting Greece from the 2nd to 14th July this year. I will staying in Athens from the 2nd to 7th July and then I will be based in Kalamata until the 13th of July.

 

I will be bringing along as a minimum a pair of binoculars and if space and weights permits a small refractor. I am not sure how bad light pollution is in Kalamata and how far I have to drive outside Kalamata and where to get a reasonable dark sky. Any comments and advice will be greatly appreciated.

 

I am aware that there is an organised observing session at the dark site of Parnonas, but I am not sure if I can attend, although I very much would like to do so.

 

Your replies need not to be in English, Greek is fine. Unfortunately I cannot type quickly in Greek.

Dear George,

 

Unfortunately I don't dwell in Kalamata anymore, otherwise I would be glad to observe with you. I used to going to the village Akovos in Arkadia (you can go there through Thouria-Poliani-Akovos). The distance is 30 km and the sky at the zenith is 6+ mg (R CrB at maximum was easy naked eye).

Another place you can observe is on Taygetos near the "Touristiko" motel. An unpaved road leads to a nice observing spot just 2 km north of the motel with a 360 degrees view although the light domes of Kalamata and Sparti are readily visible (you dont need a 4x4 vehicle but have in mind there is lots of dust and your car will need washing next day ).

I would say that if is possible come to the national gathering of amature astronomers at mountain Parnonas (9-11 of July) ! Is not very far from Kalamata!

Panayioti many many thanks for the wishes and the invitation to observe from your place and through your scope. I cannot decide from Sydney what available time I will have when I get to kalamata. This is due to the fact that I will have only a week to see family and friends for the first time after 39 years.
