The front dial of the Antikythera Mechanism: new proposals

Around 1900, fragments of a very complex device, dated to the second century BC, now

known as the Antikythera Mechanism, were found. The Mechanism looks like an ancient

clock. It appears to have had more than 30 gears and many pointers indicating, among

others, the positions of the Sun and Moon in the Zodiac, the days on an Egyptian

calendar and it predicted eclipses. The discovery of the Mechanism produced a

revolution in our understanding of the history of technology and astronomy. Following

the initial studies of Derek de Solla Price and the work o Michael Wright and the recent

investigations of the Greek/British "Antikythera Mechanism Research Group" both the

scientific and the public interest has increased substantially. In this talk I will present

two new suggestions that the Tacoma-Quilmes Group has proposed for the front dial of

Mechanism. First, I will discuss a proposal explaining how the Mechanism showed the

anomalistic motion of the Sun and, second, I will develop a proposal for showing the

possibility of a planetary motion on the Mechanism.
