Even the general public can contribute to our knowledge

of the size and shape of the asteroid (166) Rhodope

by timing an eclipse of the bright star Regulus by

that asteroid that will occur in an approximately

40-km-wide path that will cross southern Iberia,

southern Italy, and Greece early Wednesday morning,

October 19th. Please spread information about this

event as widely as possible in those countries; this

is an event rarer than the recent annular eclipse

since the next similar event, with a star this bright

by an asteroid this large or larger, will not occur

again until 2014. I have put, in English, information

that might be used by anyone with a camcorder, or

security camera system, to make an accurate observation

of this rare event; see http://iota.jhuapl.edu/mp166.htm .

But time is short for getting this to a wider audience,

preferably translating into the languages of these

countries, and publicizing on different popular Web

sites and other media. Needed are national coordinators

(we have Carles Schnabel for Spain, but need ones for

other countries) and people who might record a strong

AM standard broadcast along with accurate time so that

anyone with a stardard radio, or automobile radio,

might use it as a time base over a wide area.
