Greece At Night From Iss

Fred Ley

Here is a nice picture of Greece taken from the ISS on August 23, 2010. The view taken north of the country looking to the south. The photograph number is iss024e016042. Just came across the photo yesterday and thought that others would enjoy it too.

Nice, but the photo is overexposed, you can see it from the trailing at the lights at the surface due to the ISS movement, so it doesn't depict the real luminosity which must be darker. Other than that very nice photo.

Yes, the image does show the movement of the ISS. The image data above states that the expsoure time was 0.25 seconds. It would have been nice if the image was totally sharp. I hope that there will be some sharper images to come.

Light Pollution! Yes, Athens takes the prize being the largest city in the country. From looking at this image, it seems that there is nowhere to hide from light pollutiuon.

Something else just crossed my thoughts. The Mediterranean Sea looks quite bright in this image. I went and checked with a lunar phase calendar, and on August 23, 2010 we had a Waxing Gibbous moon and illuminated 99%.

I gather if one consults an atlas, they can pick out the names of the cities in Egypt and Libya that are visible on the coast of North Africa.
