Telescope Making Judging & Awards

Hi Everybody,

 

Amateur astronomy has come a very long way from what I experienced in Athens back in 1970.

 

On this site I am seeing more and more individuals getting into the art of telescope making. I would like to propose if it is possible, at the 6th Pan Hellenic Astronomy Meeting in July, to include a judging comittee for homemade telescopes and/or modified commercial telescopes. There could be different categories of awards and I believe that something of this nature will enhance and maintain the craft of telescope making.

 

Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

 

I would certainly like to see this idea come to fruition.

That would be a great event and in the spirit of Stellafane! However, only four scopes come to mind that would fit the specs (custom and hand-built from top to bottom) of this ... beauty contest! On the other hand if such an event was to take place, I think/hope more ATMs might consider showing up. In any case, the homemade scopes in display will definitely be very few, but it would be a wonderful start and many more people will be encouraged to present and talk about their homemade sweethearts

 

I think Fred's proposal is an excellent idea, well worth to be taken into consideration! As a side note, I can't think of any major astro-party worldwide that does not have some sort of ATM display. After all, make-do and home made stuff is and has always been part of the genuine spirit of amateur astronomy!

Well, we all need to start somewhere. After the initial event, there should be more telescopes showing up.

Now, just to kick-start this idea.

 

One can see a lot of home-made telescopes in my private album here on Astrovox. It can give one an idea as to what kind of telescopes are taken to these events. Any home-made telescope qualifies to enter.

I'd love to see restorations, conversions, innovations, even artistic interventions. The only really difficult parts are mirror grinding and lenses forming. We have a lot of capable wood and metal workers in our country (mastorantza!). It is not a fault to use industrial mirrors I believe. Anyway, everything was nothing before its commencement. We already have something to begin with.

A Greek watermelon/ newtonian would have nothing to be jealous of that Stellafane award winner of some years ago. It would allow more aperture, that's for sure!

θα μαζευτεί κόσμος με ιδιοκατασκευές αν γίνει κάποιος διαγωνισμός και θα είναι πολύ περισσότερες οι συμμετοχές απ' ότι περιμένουμε, θα μπορούσαν να λαμβάνουν μέρος και άτομα που έχουν φτιάξει μέρος τηλεσκοπίου, αξεσουάρ κλπ. (πχ είναι κάποια άτομα που έχουν φτιάξει καταπληκτικές βάσεις). Μιας που ανέφερε παραπάνω κάτι ο Άγγελος, παραθέτω σχετικη φώτο, δεν είχα ξαναδεί κάτι τόσο πρωτότυπο από ερασιτέχνη εδώ, πριν την ΠΣΕΑ στον Πάρνωνα. Επίσης μ' άρεσε πολύ η βάση του Μανούσου.

υγ. Όσοι μπορείτε γράφετε στα ελληνικά!!! Αφού ο Fred γνωρίζει ελληνικά, καλύτερα είναι να του απαντάμε στα ελληνικά έτσι ώστε να μην περιορίζουμε τον αριθμό των ατόμων που μπορούν να διαβάσουν το thread. Έτσι αυτοί που δεν γνωρίζουν την αγγλική θα προσπεράσουν ένα-δυο πόστ και όχι όλο το "νήμα".

Θα μπορούσαν να υπάρχουν διαφορετικές κατηγορίες βραβείων και πιστεύω ότι κάτι αυτού του είδους θα ενισχύσουν και να διατηρήσουν την τέχνη της λήψης τηλεσκόπιο.

 

Καθένας έχει οποιεσδήποτε σκέψεις για το θέμα αυτό?

 

Θα ήθελα βεβαίως να δούμε αυτή την ιδέα να αποδώσει καρπούς.
