8-inch Refractor

Fred, you should ask Andreas to introduce a new category about vintage and classical telescopes and other equipment, in order to put together all these photos you post. It would be very inspiring for all of us. Amateur Astronomy wasn't very popular some decades ago in Greece, so we missed the opportunity to see all this astrogear.

Yes, you do have a point there. When I started my interestin astronomy here in athens back in 1970, there was just a few of us amateurs. Some of these amateurs I still keep in touch with. I will give Andreas and call and see if I can get him to create a new section. I don't mind sharing my images with everyone else. I have got a lot of them. I could ask to have my telescope images transferred to the new section. Then I can add a whole bunch more. I find that sharing is a lot fun.

Πολύ καλά τα όσα μας δείχνει κατά καιρούς ο Fred, ο οποίος πρέπει να είναι και ό παλαιότερος εδώ έτσι, και εγώ θα συμφωνήσω ότι τέτοιες φωτογραφίες είναι πολύ όμορφες και αναδίδουν νοσταλγία σε κάποιους παλαιότερους χομπίστες ερασιτέχνες αλλά και σε μας τους πιό καινούργιους στο χόμπυ, γιαυτό φίλε Fred καλό θα είναι να μπαίνουν εδώ στο συγκεκριμμένο σημείο για να τις βλέπουν όλοι όσοι ασχολούνται με την φωτογραφία αφού μπαίνοντας στην κατηγορία αστροφωτογραφία βλέπουμε τις πρόσφατες αναρτήσεις σε όλες τις κατηγορίες φωτογράφησης, ενώ αν είναι κάπου ιδιαίτερα (διαφωνώ με τη γνώμη σου Κώστα) θα τις βλέπουν λιγότεροι.

Και μια αδιάκριτη ερώτηση Εισαι στην Ελλάδα από το 1970 και δεν μιλάς Ελληνικά?

I lived in Athens from August of 1967 through August of 1975. I then returned to California. I was here for the 1978-79 academic year studying and then again from August of 1994 through November of 1995. I returned here in September of 2003 and am still here. There is a possibility that I may return to California this year. It is hard to locate work here.

I do have a fairly good command of the Greek language. My mom was from Thessaloniki, but I always spoke to her in English. I do make a few grammatical errors when I speak as I am translating English into Greek. Most people seem to get the jist of what I am saying though.

Καλημέρα Fred εγώ να συμφωνήσω με τον Κώστα, το χω σκεφτεί και γω να στο πω αυτό.

Κάποτε είχα διαβάσει για τις δραστηριότητες στο stellafane, τις κατασκευές και τον κόσμο που μαζεύεται εκεί και θα ήθελα πολύ να ταξιδέψω όταν μπορέσω και να επισκεφτώ κάποια μέρη (μουσείο, αστεροσκοπείο, το club) εκεί, να δω κατασκευές να γνωρίσω ανθρώπους και να ακούσω απόψεις από άτομα με τελείως διαφορετική νοοτροπία (άτομα που το 1923 όταν στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο γινόταν το έλα να δεις φτιάχνανε το τηλεσκόπιο Porter και κάναν αστρο-πάρτυ!) . Εδώ λατρεύω τις νύχτες (συννεφιασμένες και μη) στον Πάρνωνα, ένα ταξίδι στην άλλη άκρη του Ειρηνικού θα ήταν το κάτι άλλο. Οι φωτογραφίες σου ψιλοταξιδεύουν, βγάζουν κάτι όμορφο, συλλεκτικό (μάλλον νοσταλγικό για τους παλιότερους), εξωτικό, σαν παλιό καλό κρασί.

 

Θα κοιτάξω τώρα κάποιες παλιότερες σου(νομίζω είχες ανεβάσει κι άλλες κι από Vermont) συνέχισε να μας ταξιδεύεις Ευχαριστούμε!

The telescopes shown here on Astrovox are from the Riverside Telescope Makers Conference, held every May at Big Bear Lake in Southern California at an altitude of about 7,500 feet. Some telescopes and a list of the talks given at past events, along with awards for home made telescopes can be found at the following web site http://www.rtmcastronomyexpo.org/ if interested.

 

I have never made it to Stellafane in Vermont, which is clear on the other side of the country. California is a nice place to visit for such an event. Apart from the RTMC event there is JPL in Pasadena, Mt. Wilson Observatory (60-inch and 100-inch), Mt Palomar Observatory, Big Bear Solar Observatory, Griffith Observatory and planetarium in Los Angeles. Astronomy clubs in the Southern California area always have events going on on the weekends. So if one were to visit an RTMC event and wanted to some more astronomy oriented sightseeing, there is lots. There is also the telescope manufacturers in the area, but I do not think that they offer tours of their facilities.

 

Apart from the world of astronomy, there is sports, the coast, and a whole host of other things to see and do. There is always Disneyland.

I must assume that you have already visited Stellafane's web site, if not, it warrants a visit. It is at http://stellafane.org/ You will find a plethora of inofrmation on making telescopes, suppliers, lot of images of ATM telescopes and toms of additional inofrmation. Be prepared to spend some time going through the site.

 

I have the biography of Russell W. Porter by Berton C. Willard and it makes very interesting reading. The history of astronomy is one of my main interest too.

 

Do try to find time to go through the Stellafane site, if you have not already done so, it is very interesting.

Ναι φυσικά το χω ψάξει! Σαν νέα και ενθουσιασμένη ενδιαφέρομαι τόσο για τον εξοπλισμό (είδη τηλεσκοπίων που δεν είχα ξανακούσει, από διαγωνισμούς ευρεσιτεχνίας κλπ) όσο και για την ιστορία. Έχει απίστευτη πληροφορία το site και πηγές . Θα κοιτάξω και τη βιογραφία που προτείνεις. Thanks!
