    Vandenberg Launch

October 14, 2002. AFSPC launch. Modified Minuteman II. Payload was an unarmed reentry vehicle (warhead) and decoys. Vehicle launched in support of the IFT-9 missile defense test. 19:01 to 23:01 PDT launch window. UTC launch date/time: OCT 15 02:01:00. Launch occurred 31 minutes after Vandenberg''s sunset and created an impressive display seen across California and also in Nevada, Oregon, and Utah. My first image was taken at 19:01 hrs. PST (02:01 UTC) and the second, lower, image was taken at 19:04 hrs. PST (02:04 UTC). The digital camera that I employed recorded time only to the minute and not to the second. Hence my time accuracy is only to the minute. -Fred
  2. Hi Blackholesun, That certainly is a lot of issues you have there. as I have been doing astronomy for a somewhat longer period of time, my collection goes back to 1946. I am missing a few issues up to 1958. The rest I have up to this year. I would have to look in some boxes to see what exactly I have that may be duplicate. One other good place to look on is EBAY. I either have magazines sent to me here in Athens or sent to my home in California. By the way, 1971 is when I first started subscribing to Sky & Telescope, so it has been quite a few years. I was 14 years old at the time and I just turned 52-wow! -Fred
  3. Hi Ilias, Now where have I seen this image? Yes, it was on www.spaceweather.com this morning. The image came out very nice. -Fred
  4. I got it off of EBAY. I am trying to fill the gaps that I have in my collection. -Fred

    Sky & Telescope May 1946

Here is a 63 year old issue of Sky & Telescope, well, ok, 65 years old next month. The magazine was quite thin in those days. this issue has only 24 pages and that is including the front and back cover. It has very minimal amount of advertising in it. I guess things have come a long since then. -Fred
  6. Hi Anthony, Nice images you have there. The 48-inch mirror looks like it could really use a new coating of aluminum. You know, I have never asked if they have a re-aluminizing chamber on site. It would be interesting to spend a night looking at some of the interesting objects like Jupiter and Saturn among others through the telescope. There is an article in the March, 1976 issues of Sky & Telescope about this telescope. I have scanned it and have it on my hard drive if you would like a copy. -Fred
  7. Hi Spiros and Ilias, Thanks for the birthday wishes. Yikes-I turn 52. Seems like yesterday I was 14 and doing all of my initial observing from our balcony and roof top here in Athens. Wow-time sure does fly. I wish that I had taken a better image of the planets, but sometimes something is better than nothing. -Fred
  8. Hi Vasillis, I decided to use the digital camera that I had at that time and the image came out not to bad. The roof of the garage in the foreground. It is nice in that I have an unobstructed view of the horizon from my location. -Fred

Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus & Mercury

From the album: Personal Gallery Of Fred Ley

  10. This image shows the planets of Jupiter, saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury on the evening of April 23, 2002. Taken at my home in Lancaster, California. I was using a 1.2 megapixel Olympus camera.
  11. Yes sir, I totally agree with Vasillis. The customer is always number one. Honest and courteous dealing with a customer is paramount. The customer is what keeps the business going-as we all know. But, we want the customer to be a repeat customer. Advertising is great, but free advertising by word of mouth is really good and goes the extra mile. I have never heard of Al doing anything "odd". -Fred

    Αρχαίος ναός - Νέα Σελήνη

Ah-ha! This morning I further examined your image and discovered that you have six images of the Moon. I did not notice the small piece of the Moon protruding from above the metopes on the east side of the Parthenon and that there is another small piece of the Moon protruding from the north-east column of the Parthenon. Very nice. -Fred

    Κρόνος 29/03/09

Great attempt at getting the image. As we all know the atmosphere at times just does not want to co-operate with us. Taking the image with the afocal method can be hard at times, especially for me. when I use a digital camera and try to get a good focus. Thanks for sharing. -Fred

  16. Nice images John, Is the middle one perhaps M82? The one one the right looks like M81 and we all recognise the signature of M51, in Canes Vanetici, on the left -Fred

    Saturns rings edge-on today

Hi Everybody, Well, the article posted on astro-Mart carries the title "Saturns Rings Visible Edge-on Tonight". So I figured that that is neat. Now, I went back read the whole article and it states that "Although the rings have now passed being exactly edge-on due to Saturn's continuous orbit around the sun, Shelton describes the slight degree change as "barely noticeable." She said she is sure it is almost impossible to detect with the naked eye." Anyhow I hope that someone was able to get some nice images of the planet and its Moons. This link should take you directly to the article http://www.astromart.com/news/news.asp?news_id=919 -Fred

    Saturns rings edge-on today

Hi Everybody, I was wondering if anyone will be in a position to get some nice images of the rings of Saturn which are edge-on today? Unfortunately, where I live does not allow me any access to the sky. Keep reaching for the stars. -Fred

    Twilight 2-28-09

Hi Tsaprazi, Yes, your first choice is correct-it is the planet Venus. Glad that you enjoyed the photograph. I have always liked the time between daylight and night for taking photographs, where the colors and light are soft. -Fred

  23. Nothing wrong with owning firearms. You just have to give them a lot of respect. One safety rule I always follow is that when handed a firearm, ALWAYS, make sure it is empty-even if the person who just handed it to you checked. I have had a handgun handed to me that was thought to be empty, I checked and it had a clip full of rounds in it. I don't hunt, just target shoot. -Fred Life Member, National Rifle Association www.nra.org
  24. Unfortunately, I left back in California with a friend of mine. Next time I go back I'll buy a few boxes of ammo and go target shooting. My daughter even enjoyes shooting with it. I thought that the 357 rounds might be a bit much for her, but she handled it ok. I don't think the Single Six is chrome plated, it may appear that way from the photograph. I believe that it is just stainless steel. -Fred
