    Snake Gun

From the album: Personal Gallery Of Fred Ley

I put this bad boy in a holster when I am out at the observatory. I always keep a couple of 357 rounds in it apart from the shotshells for the scorpions and snakes.
  2. Vasili, Don't forget the M60, M63, M73 machine-gun. Hey there was even some early sub machine-guns and carbines with a M1, M2 and M3 designation. Kind of an interesting connection that you brought up. go to my private photo page and I'll show you what I use for snake and scorpion protect. It has a 6-inch barrel with nice rubber grips. The original wooden ones from Ruger were useless. -Fred
  3. The M14 is a great rifle. I used to have a Ruger Mini14 that took .223 rounds. I used a convenient 30-round clip that was great for target shooting. It sure is loud when one forgets to use their hearing protectors. Where abouts do you shoot? In my observatory I use a Ruger Security Six that chambers .357 Magnum rounds. Being in the desert, I use shot shells in case I come across scorpions or rattlesankes. Oh by the way, nice set up. -Fred

    1972 Astronomy Conference In Athens

From the album: Personal Gallery Of Fred Ley

Three clippings from local newspapers announcing the First European Astronomical Meeting held in Athens at the Pantion School of Political Science on Syngrou Avenue. I was able to register and attend the conference. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Apollo 17

From the album: Personal Gallery Of Fred Ley

A clipping I made on December 12, 1972 from the newspaper. On a side-note, it was interesting observing the Moon at that time because I was actually observing an \"inhabited\" object. Enjoy! -Fred

    Twilight 2-28-09

Hey Guys, The image was taken with an 85 Euro Sony 8.1 mp camera, one of them small pocket jobs. I havn't done anything to the image, it is as it was taken. Thanks for the comments. -Fred

Moon and Venus, taken from a cozy observation spot just north of Cape Sounion.

    Image3

John, Nice collage you posted. I guess that the Saturn image was taken when we were out on Saturday night. Brrrrr.... I can't wait for the warm summer nights. -Fred
  9. Hey Chris, Nice photo you have there. It is nice to be able to get a view like that without having an aircraft cross your field unless it is a nice big meteor coming in for a landing somewhere. Anymore? -Fred

    Ic 443

Oh No, The Cosmic Jellyfish that attacked Tokyo! Hey! How about some Lulin images? You know, that long comet thing in the sky. -Fred PS-By the way, nice image.

    Ic 443 Area

Hi Dimitri, Nice image you have there. I will go and look up the location of this object. There is to much "stuff" out there to remember it all. -Fred Update- Checked Wikipedia for IC 443 and discovered it is a supernova remnant in the constellation of Gemini. It is also known as the Jellyfish Nebula too.
  12. Hi Guys, The image was taken from my home in California. I have a very nice view of the horizon to the west, north, south and east. Well, on the east there is a small hill that really is not a bother. I can even see Canopus from the property, but it is quite low in the sky and is not visible for a long period. The Milky Way gets really interestingto the eye when the Los Angeles basin gets filled with fog. It just cuts the light pollution way down. Glad you enjoyed the image. -Fred

    High Desert Sunset

Here is sunset taken on October 11, 2001 with an Olympus 1.2 mp digital camera. I have a nice horizon looking west. It makes observing Mercury easy.
  14. Hi Niko, I havn't read what everyone else wrote, so I'll pitch in my two-cents worth. One excellent place to start with is the "star party". That's where us astro-lovers gather so that we can look through telescopes and bring all those photons to a focus in an eyepiece. Go to one of these events and get there early so that you can look at all of the different instruments. As you probably are aware of, they come in all sizes, shapes, weights, colors and prices. Most amateurs are willing to spend time showing their telescope to you and to discuss it merits. At night many will let you look through their telescope too. There are many good books out their for the beginner. If it is a text in the Greek language, you will have to rely on what others have recommended to you. I can't read or write Greek worth beans. So I hope that you are able to read this. The county of Aticca, as us stargazers know, is not good for doing any deep sky observing anywhere within its boundaries. It is ok for the Moon, Planets, Variable Stars, Double Star and some CCD work. Naturally any distance away from the center of Athens is of some help. Hope that this is of some use for you. Over and out, Fred
  15. Hi Spartiatis, NIce, Venus and a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. That was a neat aircraft in its day. -Fred
  16. The Astronomy Sketch of the Day site is really interesting. I used to make drawings when I first began doing astronomy-nothing really good. In those days it would have cost a lot to get lots of film developed and not to mention purchased. Somewhere I have a sketch of the sword of Orion that I made from my balcony in Athens around 1972. It was all done by just looking through the eyepiece. -Fred

    Pendeli-spring-1974

A photo from Freds time machine that I took of the dome in the Spring of 1974 when a group of use went to visit the observatory. The tree in the center foreground, along with many others, have since burned down due to fire some years ago. Enjoy. -F-
  18. Hi All, This is real neat stuff to watch and record as we pass throught the ring plane of Saturn. Thanks for sharing the info. -Fred
  19. Hi Kalbie, Very nice images indeed. Do you know if the telescope is made by Zeiss? It has that "Zeiss" look to it. I also enjoyed the higher angle of the RA shaft on the mount. Prague is quite a bit further north of Athens-as we know. Thanks for sharing. -Fred
  20. It appears that a supernova has been discovered, on December 26, in the galaxy M61. Further information is available at this link... http://www.eu-hou.net/supernovae/index.php?id=16&kod=194 -Fred
  21. Hi, There is an interesting site of the United States Geologic Survey at http://astrogeology.usgs.gov/Projects/LunarConsortium/ that may give you some information of areas of the Moon for observing or other interests. The book by Rukl is a good one. I have a copy that was issued in the early 1980's. I hope that the USGS link may be of some use to you. -Fred
  22. So, you finally got around to posting this great image of M31. It certainly came out real, real nice. It should look nice as a poster on a wall. Well done. -Fred
  23. Hi Aggelos, Hey! The observatory turned out real nice. Now that you have the instrument all set up to rock 'n roll whenever you want to. Job well done, Fred
  24. Hi Achilleas, Very informative article you have there. I have never had the good fortune to visit Paris-as of yet. Besides the art galleries and other points of interest in Paris, I would like to visit the astronomical places that it has to offer too. Thanks again, Fred
  25. Hey, another winner. Great shot of the three brightest objects in the night sky. -Fred
