Hi Fred, Congrats for your 6in mirror - well done. When I joined the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) many years ago, FRED CLARKE a very knowledgeable and dedicated telescope and mirror maker was giving mirror making classes at our Centre. Many of our members have made some very decent mirrors under the watchful eye of Fred Clarke. I have helped a few members push a few mirrors and one year I helped push the 22 inch mirror at Stellafane but I must admit I am not an expert. Anyway Fred passed away a few years ago and in his honor an annual award is presented at CAFTA (Concours Annuel de Fabricants de Telescopes d'Amateurs) ... translated it means: "Annual Telescope Making Contest". This is a Local Telescope Makers Convention held annually where telescope makers from all the clubs in Montreal and the surrounding areas get to present their telescopes and enter them in the competition ... basically it is a "mini Stellafane"... Located about 1 hour from Montreal CAFTA has for many years presented the Fred Clarke Award in his memory. See below for more details: http://membres.lycos.fr/cdadfs/cafta.html -Frank. -

Φιλε Σπύρο, Έχω παρατηρήσει με 5 διαφορετικά Schiefspieglers - ενα είναι εδώ στο Μόντρεαλ και ανήκει στο φίλο μου τον Constantine ... Φιλε Ilias, I had the opportunity to see this telescope at Stellafane and I remember chatting with the owner. I have mentioned this numerous times in previous posts, "Stellafane is indeed one of my favorite Star Party Conventions" I have been attending Stellafane since 1989 - I have observed through literally many hundreds of telescopes at this convention, and I have learned (and seen) what it means for a telescope to have "good optics". Nowhere else can you see such exotic designs and at the same time have the opportunity to discuss the optical and mechanical components with the people who actually designed and built the telescopes. The friendships that you make at these conventions last a lifetime. Below is an image of another Schiefspiegler that was at the Stellafane convention in 2005. Give my regards to your friend Wes. Hey Fred, As you know Stellafane is the birthplace of ATM .. The Springfield Telescope Makers group is still quite active and they offer mirror grinding courses throughout the year. Aside from these guys there are now so many Optical companies that produce good mirrors that many ATM's are opting to purchase the optics and construct the rest of the scope themselves. One fellow in our club recently built a very fine 12in Reflector - with optics that were purchased locally - The member told me that "time wise" it did not make sense for him to spend countless hours pushing glass ... he prefered to spend that time under the stars observing the heavens. Είναι ένα περίπλοκο (sophisticated) σχέδιο, για τους πολύ προηγμένους ATM (Amateur Telescope Makers). Hey Fred, Yes this was indeed a real treat for everyone who attended the convention last year. Stellafane has it's own permanent (13 in) Shupmann telescope located in the McGregor Observatory just on top of the lower observing field in the heart of Stellafane. I have observed Mars with the 13in Shupmann at Stellafane and the images were truly amazing. Unless you have these permanently installed it is very difficult to keep this telescope aligned and collimated but once this is done the images are truly amazing. Frank -
Aυτή η ομάδα τον 5 Schupmann προήλθαν από διαφορετικά μέρη των ΗΠΑ να συναντηθουν και να επιδείξουν τα τηλεσκόπιά τους. Αυτά τα τηλεσκόπια δίνουν καταπληκτικές εικόνες - Εδώ παρατηρούσαμε την Αφροδίτη in the daytime.

Σπάνια τηλεσκόπια - Aυτή η ομάδα τον 5 Schupmann προήλθαν από διαφορετικά μέρη των ΗΠΑ να συναντηθουν και να επιδείξουν τα τηλεσκόπιά τους. Και πάλι σας ευχαριστώ παιδιά. Την Παρασκευή 07 Μαρτίου έλαβα το τηλεσκόπιο - μια ημέρα νωρίτερα - Εκαvα setup το τηλεσκόπιο και σιγουρεύτηκα ότι όλα έφθασαν εντάξει Δυστυχώς έχουμε ακόμα χιόνι και θα είναι μια εβδομάδα ή δύο προτού να μπορέσω να το πάρω έξω για το "πρώτο φως" Θα βγάλω μερικές φωτογραφίες και θα τις κάνω Post.

φίλε Δημήτρη - η ερώτησή σου έχει να κάνει με "tolerances" (ανοχές ??) - μερικοί purists επιμένουν ότι η ευθυγράμμιση του τηλεσκοπίου πρέπει να γίνει κάθε φορά που κινείστε προς ένα διαφορετικό μέρος του ουρανού - ουσιαστικά αυτά είναι αηδίες - Εντούτοις συνιστάται η ευθυγράμμιση να ελέγχεται τουλάχιστον μιά φορά μετά από μερικές ώρες παρατήρησης - ειδικά με τα Truss Tube τηλεσκόπια - τα Solid Tube τηλεσκόπια δεν επηρεάζονται πολύ. Αφότου χρησιμοποιούμε το τηλεσκόπιό μας για extended periods of time ξέρουμε όταν η οπτική ποιότητα δεν είναι οτι πρέπει - έτσι η επαλήθευση της ευθυγράμμισής μας είναι εμφανής. για να απαντήσο στην ερώτηση άμεσα - οποιαδήποτε απόκλιση από τον οπτικό άξονα θεωρείται "not collimated ".. τώρα περιερχόμαστε στο συλλογισμό των Purists .. Οποιοδήποτε f/6 τηλεσκόπιο είναι κάπως "forgiving" - εάν είσε <1 mm από το κέντρο - δεν θα είναι τόσο εμφανές όσο ένα f4.5 τηλεσκόπιο. .. this is why the f/6 is considered the Sweet Spot .. Αλλά γιατί να σκεφτόμαστε αυτα ... Καλύτερα να σιγουρευόμαστε ότι το τηλεσκόπιο είναι κατάλληλα ευθυγραμμισμένο για να επιτρέψει την καλύτερη απόδοσή του. -

Τώρα θα έχω την ευκαιρία να ελέγξω την ακρίβεια του Barlowed Laser και να το συγκρίνω με τα Tectron Tools. Από αυτα που έχω διαβάσει το Barlowed laser είναι μια άριστη επιλογή και είναι αρκετά ακριβής - θα δούμε.

Hey Fred, Don't know if you ever had the chance to view through one of these telescopes ... I have seen the Starmaster 18in and the 20in and both Zambuto mirrors were simply out of this world. ... 600x on Jupiter with NO image breakdown... Next time you're in the USA check them out when you get the opportunity. Frank -

Fred, If I had to choose an object then it must be Saturn - only because it was the first celestial object a 12 year old boy once observed through a telescope many years ago, and perhaps, it should be this magnificent Orb that also gets first light through his dream scope as well.
