PROJECT 27 February 2008 : AN INVITATION TO WATCH THE TRANSIT OF EXTRASOLAR PLANET XO-2b FROM EUROPEAN ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORIES A WIDE-RANGE INITIATIVE PROMOTED BY: PLANETARY RESEARCH TEAM – COELUM ASTRONOMIA - Italy The search for extrasolar planets is a most recent field in Astronomy; yet, due to its ties with "hot" topics in other cultural areas (religion and philosophy, to name but a few) it is increasingly gaining relevance among astronomers. In due time, the efforts spent in this field might even provide an answer to a crucial unsolved question, as old as mankind itself: do other life-forms, other inhabited worlds exist? Only twelve years have passed since 6 October 1995, when the Swiss astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, of the Geneva Observatory, announced in Florence the discovery of a planet outside the Solar System, orbiting the star 51 Pegasi – 50 light years away from the Sun. The mass of the planet was 160 times Earth's; it completed its orbit in little more than four days, at a distance of 7.5 million kilometres from 51 Pegasi. Belief in the existence of other inhabited worlds is deeply rooted in human soul; however, proving such an assertion is an entirely different matter. A first fundamental step is the completion of a survey mapping the extrasolar planets revolving around the stars of our Galaxy's spiral arm; this goal can be achieved through advanced observational techniques, aimed at detecting a planetary transit. Such an event takes place whenever the extrasolar system is aligned with Earth and the planet passes before the disc of its parent star, producing a small eclipse. Because of the enormous distance, the planet can't be actually "seen", but astronomers observe a small drop in the star's brightness. OUR PROPOSAL: WATCHING THE TRANSIT OF PLANET XO-2b FROM THE WHOLE EUROPE We are organizing an observational event for Italy (hoping, however, to see it arranged in other European countries as well): on 27 February 2008, we will watch the transit of the extrasolar planet XO-2b. The event will be observed by telescopes, and commented for participants, from 20:55 to 23:41 U.T. (Universal Time). XO-2b was discovered in 2007 by an international research group - including the Italians F. Mallia and G. Masi. We now know XO-2b to be slightly smaller than Jupiter: it completes an orbit in 2 days plus 15 hours, being 5.5 million kilometres away from its star. The system is 500 light-years away from the Earth; the star has about the same mass as our Sun, though it's orange in colour. Aim of the proposed event (international in character as well as in scope) is to show, for the first time ever , the transit of an extrasolar planet through the telescopes of several astronomical observatories throughout Europe, involving general public as well as school classes in the happening. In order to achieve this result, co-operation of as many observatories across the continent as possible is required. Astronomical observatories joining the project - including those outside Italy - will be provided with free documentation, in English and French, designed to help and support people giving talks or performing other activities during the transit. Free software is available for CCD imaging and data reduction, allowing observers to obtain real-time light curves for the star. Final testing of the software is currently being performed at Monte d'Aria Observatory in Serrapetrona (Macerata, Italy), by Angelo Angeletti and Fabiano Barabucci.
