Δεν ακολουθεί την φορά της κίνησης των άστρων του ουρανού (η οποία φαίνεται καθαρά πως είναι διαγώνια) και ούτε διαθέτει ιδιοκίνηση, παρά μένει στατικό σε σχέση με την κάμερα. Το "commercial space travel to low Earth orbit (LEO)" μπορεί να αναπλαισιωθεί ώστε να συμπεριλαμβάνει την έννοια του διαστημικού τουρισμού. Η ακριβολογία είναι ευκταία και μεγάλο προτέρημα, ο καθημερινός λόγος όμως ακολουθεί τους δικούς του νόμους και υπάρχει λόγος γι αυτό καθώς η fuzzy logic δίνει εξελικτικό πλεονέκτημα στην καθημερινότητα. Οι επιστήμονες εκπαιδεύονται να ξεπερνούν το εμπόδιο αυτού του τρόπου σκέψης στον τομέα τους (αλλά σπάνια στην καθημερινότητά τους). The society has online petitions that supporters can sign. One is for U.S. citizens to send to their Congressmen. The other is an international petition that will be sent to President Obama. Both petitions are broadly written; the domestic appeal reads: As your constituent and a member of the Planetary Society, I implore you to support NASA in its primary mission of space exploration. Please take a stand against letting vested interests legislate how to build rockets, while precious opportunities to advance science, technology and space exploration pass us by. By pioneering space exploration, NASA creates scientific and economic value for the future of our world. Meanwhile, other groups have issued statements saying that the JWST is far too valuable and far along in its development to cancel. American Astronomical Society Statement The proposal released on July 6 by the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies to terminate the James Webb Space Telescope would waste more taxpayer dollars than it saves while simultaneously undercutting the critical effort to utilize American engineering and ingenuity to expand human knowledge. Such a proposal threatens American leadership in the fields of astrophysics and advanced space technology while likely eliminating hundreds, if not thousands, of high-tech jobs. Additionally, this proposal comes before the completion of a revised construction plan and budget for a launch of JWST by 2018. The United States position as the leader in astronomy, space science, and spaceflight is directly threatened by this proposal. The JWST is the highest-ranked mission in the National Academy of Science’s Astronomy and Astrophysics decadal survey released in 2000 and remains a high priority for the Nation’s astronomers in this decade as well, as the revolutionary successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. This survey, conducted once every 10 years by hundreds of the Nation’s leading scientists, prioritizes — based on scientific merit and impact — projects proposed by the scientific community that require significant government support for completion. These reports represent a community consensus on the efforts necessary to advance our knowledge of the universe. The potential of JWST to transform astronomy underlies many of the activities recommended in the 2010 decadal report released last August. JWST is designed to observe well beyond Hubble’s capabilities. It is expected to serve thousands of astronomers in the coming decades to revolutionize our understanding of our place in the Universe, just as Hubble has done since its completion and launch just over two decades ago. The JWST’s completion, launch, and operation will unveil new knowledge about the earliest formation of stars and planets and on a wide range of additional advanced scientific questions, including many not yet formulated. As was true with the Hubble Space Telescope, recognized as a tremendous success by the public, scientists, and policy-makers, building the most advanced telescopes comes with the risk of unexpected costs and delays. However, the whole Nation can rightly take pride in the engineering and scientific accomplishment that the completion and launch of such instruments represents. With the help of important international partners, we are the only nation that could lead such an effort; we should not shirk from completing the project when the most difficult engineering challenges have already been overcome. As stated in the Casani report, an independent review of project readiness completed late last year, “The JWST Project has made excellent progress in developing the difficult technologies required for its successful operation, and no technical constraints to successful completion have been identified.” The mirrors stand ready and waiting for integration into the spacecraft. The telescope has passed both preliminary design review and critical design review. It is time to complete construction and look ahead to JWST’s launch and science operations. The American Astronomical Society calls upon all members of Congress to support JWST to its completion and to provide strong oversight on the path to this goal. Too many taxpayer dollars have already been spent to cancel the mission now; its benefits far outweigh the remaining costs. We must see the mission through. We are a great nation and we do great things. JWST represents our highest aspirations and will be one of our most significant accomplishments. Association of University for Research in Astronomy Today, AURA strongly objected to the proposal by the House Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee to terminate the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). JWST remains the world’s foremost effort to push the boundaries of astronomy and astrophysics. Over the past year, NASA managers and the science community have undertaken a concerted effort to establish a budget and technology plan that allows the launch of JWST by 2018. The proposal by the Congress to terminate the program comes at a time when these efforts are coming to fruition. In addition, in June, NASA contractors completed the polishing and fabrication of all of the JWST mirrors completing one of the most challenging technical hurdles. In commenting on the proposed cancellation, Dr. William S. Smith, President of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy said “Against a backdrop of widespread discussion over the future of NASA and the human spaceflight program, it is tragic that the Congress is also proposing to curtail NASA’s science program. The proposal provides $50.2 billion overall for the nation’s projects in those areas, which is $7.4 billion less than President Obama’s budget request. NASA’s budget is slashed by $1.6 billion, which is $1.9 billion less than Obama hopes for. The space agency’s science funding has been cut by $431 million from last year. “The bill also terminates funding for the James Webb Space Telescope, which is billions of dollars over budget and plagued by poor management,” an Appropriations Committee press release said. Fox News reported that in November, a congressional panel described the telescope as “NASA’s Hurricane Katrina,” due to it being massively over budget and its destructive toll on other agency projects. Goddard Space Flight Center said last week that the telescope may not launch until after 2018. Matt Mountain, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, told the New York Times that canceling the Webb telescope would “have a profound impact on astrophysics far into the future, threatening U.S. leadership in space science.” “This is particularly disappointing at a time when the nation is struggling to inspire students to take up science and engineering,” he added. According to Jennifer Hing, a spokeswoman for the committee, the measure is expected to be approved Thursday by the subcommittee in charge of NASA and the other agencies. The full Appropriations Committee will meet again next Wednesday to consider the final bill.

NASA Wants Commercial Crew, Technology Feb 15, 2011 By Frank Morring, Jr. morring@aviationweek.com WASHINGTON The Obama administration’s $18.7 billion NASA budget request for fiscal 2012 continues the new policies started in last year’s request, with a stronger push into commercial space travel to low Earth orbit (LEO) and modifications to accommodate the three-year NASA authorization enacted in December. In a bid to follow President Barack Obama’s overall science and technology policy, the new budget aims to create “a sustainable program of exploration and innovation,” according to Administrator Charles Bolden’s introduction to the strategic plan that accompanies the budget request. “This new direction extends the life of the International Space Station, supports the growing commercial space industry, and addresses important scientific challenges while continuing our commitment to robust human space exploration, science and aeronautics programs,” Bolden states. “The strong bipartisan support for the NASA Authorization Act of 2010 confirms our essential role in addressing the nation’s priorities.” The government’s effort to seed private development of commercial crew and cargo transportation to the ISS and other LEO destinations would be boosted to $850 million in the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1 — up from the $612 million authorized but not appropriated in the current fiscal year. But the James Webb Space Telescope, which an outside panel has found faces a cost overrun of at least $1.5 billion, would get only $375 million to continue fabrication and testing while NASA conducts its own calculations. The budget request carries no launch date for the telescope, and says there will not be one until the fiscal 2013 request a year from now. The independent review ordered by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), who chairs the appropriations panel that funds NASA, estimated that launch of the deep-space infrared telescope will have to slip more than a year from its old September 2014 target. If the new budget is adopted by Congress, which has yet to fund NASA for the current fiscal year, commercial vehicles could start delivering crews to the ISS by 2016, with commercial cargo deliveries by Orbital Sciences Corp. and Space Exploration Technologies Inc. (SpaceX) starting in 2013. But the NASA request does not commit to a date for the first flight of the heavy-lift Space Launch System (SLS) ordered in the authorization act. Instead, it calls for $2.81 billion in 2012 to begin work on the vehicle and the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) that would ride atop it on deep-space missions and — as a backup to the hoped-for commercial crew vehicles — to the ISS. Congress had ordered a first flight of the heavy lifter in six years. In keeping with the approach started with last year’s request, NASA would embark on an open-ended program of technology development needed to enable human exploration beyond LEO. The new request also merges the enabling technology development and demonstration program that has been run under the defunct Constellation Program to the agency’s new technology office, which would get a total budget of $1.024 billion. The technology office was set up last year, but has accomplished little actual research and development because Congress has not appropriated funds for it. The new request comes as budget hawks in the new Republican-controlled House make their voices heard in debate on a continuing resolution to fund the government for the rest of fiscal 2011. As a result, NASA acknowledges that out-year figures after 2012 are only “notional.” In the constrained spending environment, the agency has maintained a flat funding line that falls below last year’s out-year projections in many instances. For example, Earth science missions in development that had been accelerated are slowed, while the Landsat Data Continuity Mission, Global Precipitation Mission and the replacement Orbiting Carbon Observatory are kept on schedule under an overall $1.797 billion request. Plans to launch the big Mars Science Laboratory lander remain on track for this fall under the $1.54 billion planetary science budget, while the agency’s aeronautics program refocuses its hypersonics work on “foundational research” under a $569 million top line for the fiscal year. Top-line figures in the fiscal 2012 request for NASA are: Science at $5.017 billion; aeronautics at $569 million; space technology at $1.024 billion; exploration systems at $3.949 billion; space operations at $4.347 billion; education at $138 million; cross-agency support at $3.192 billion, and inspector general at $38 million. Bolden plans to merge the exploration systems and space operations mission directorates later this year, but the budget accounts will be kept separate. The new request assumes a third space shuttle flight this year — STS-135 — before the fleet is retired. Sustaining and utilizing the ISS until at least 2020 will become the primary near-term focus of the merged mission directorate.

Κώστα τα ερευνητικά ερωτήματα που θέτεις είναι πολύ ενδιαφέροντα. Σε μερικά από αυτα οι απαντήσεις νομίζω θα έρθουν γρήγορα εάν απευθυνθείς σε συλλόγους ή σε καταστήματα. Σε άλλα, πιο "βαθειά", χρειάζεται βέβαια ιδιαίτερη μεθοδολογία, την οποία κατά τεκμήριο κατέχεις. Τώρα, ως προς την αντιπροσωπευτικότητα, θα ήταν ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρον να διευκρινήσεις τις ιδιότητες, την έκταση και τη σύσταση του πληθυσμού που επιθυμείς να διερευνήσεις (?), και πώς θα όριζες ένα πιθανό δείγμα (?). Astrogreetings, Νομίζω πως, εφ' όσον υπάρχουν και μοναχικοί παρατηρητές ή και απομονωμένοι πυρήνες, το να ορίσεις ένα δείγμα αποτελεί σφάλμα. Μάλλον θα πρέπει να ξεκινήσεις από τους συλλόγους και τα καταστήματα (τα εδώ, αλλά και τα ηλεκτρονικά του εξωτερικού) και κατόπιν να εφαρμόσεις μια τεχνική Boule de Neige. Αυτή βέβαια είναι δουλειά των ψυχολόγων και κοστίζει πολύ -χρειάζονται πολλοί ερευνητές ή πολύς χρόνος-, εγώ είμαι απλώς κλινικός ιατρός, αλλά δικαιούμαι να αναρωτούμαι.

Αυτό πίστευα και εγώ αλλά πλέον έχω σοβαρές αμφιβολίες. Φυσικά, όπως και τα Μεταμαθηματικά.

Δεν έκρυβε εκπλήξεις λοιπόν η ψηφοφορία. Και ακολούθησε τον νόμο των τρίτων με έναν ιδιότυπο τρόπο: η αγέλη (ομάδα) απορρόφησε το "κοπάδι" όπως είναι εύλογο για ένα είδος θηρευτών το οποίο όμως χαρακτηρίζεται από υπερπροσαρμοστικότητα. Όπως είπα με απασχολούσε το θέμα αυτό προσφάτως όπως εξ αρχής με απασχόλησε η μελέτη των ανθρώπινων χαρακτήρων του χώρου, ένεκα της επαγγελματικής διαστροφής. Δεδομένου πως ξεκίνησα μοναχικά και η πρώτη μου κοινωνικοποίηση επιχειρήθηκε στο Astrovox χρειάστηκε αρκετός καιρός για να καταλάβω πως αυτό το εκπληκτικό forum δεν είναι αντιπροσωπευτικό του πληθυσμού των ερασιτεχνών αστρονόμων, αστροφωτογράφων και αστροπαρατηρητών. Αρκετοί δεν το έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει ποτέ, αρκετοί το έχουν εγκαταλείψει, αρκετοί το χρησιμοποιούν όποτε συμφέρει (κάποια αγγελία, κάποια αναγγελία). Πολύ θα ήθελα να γνωρίζω αυτά τα ποσοστά. Πόσοι είναι εγγεγραμμένοι στους διαφόρους συλλόγους της χώρας, πόσα τηλεσκόπια (και είδος, διαμέτρημα) χρησιμοποιούνται στην χώρα μας και πόσα έχουν πωληθεί από τα εντός και εκτός της χώρας καταστήματα, ποιά η γεωγραφική κατανομή των χρηστών και ό,τι θα μπορούσε να μετρηθεί. Πόσοι παρατηρούν και πόσοι φωτογραφίζουν. Και κατόπιν, πώς σκέπτονται, τι αισθάνονται, με τι αγχώνονται, γιατί τσακώνονται οι ερασιτέχνες αστρονόμοι. Πως αντιλαμβάνεται ο καθείς την αστρονομική επιτευγματικότητα: του οράν, του γιγνώσκειν, του είναι, του έχειν. Γιατί το επίτευγμα πρέπει να μοιράζεται και γιατί όχι και για ποιούς ισχύει το ένα και για ποιούς το άλλο. Πολύ θα ήθελα να κάνω μια τέτοια συζήτηση και γνωρίζω πως αυτό δεν μπορεί να γίνει εδώ. Χρειάζεται ικανότητα μεταεπικοινωνίας που γενικώς σπανίζει καθώς διδάσκεται στην τυπική εκπαίδευση από καθόλου έως ελάχιστα.
