  1. OK, Sign me up, I 'll take it. Can't wait to see more results of this AO sytem with smaller instruments. Should be spectacular. -Fred
  2. Hi Anthony, Real nice photo spread. It's great that they want more of your images. That means more fun "work" for you with the telescope at night, but who cares, as along as you are having having fun. Lets see what they are going to do with you in their December issue. Can't wait to see. Keep on Trucking, -Fred
  3. Hi, I use the Meade variable polarizing filter. It has a thunbscrew on the outside that one can loosen which then allows for the one filter to be rotated against the second filter which is stationary. It works like a charm. Fred
  4. Dimitri, Very images you have there. It has been quite some years since I last visited London. The museum that I want to go and visit again is the Science Museum. They had many old telescopes there among other interesting items. Yes, there is so much to see in these large museums that one is bound to miss something, which warrants going back a few times when visiting the city. Fred

    Lunar Eclipse - Ottawa Canada

Hi Frank, I see that it was you guys turn to have a lunar eclipse this time round. Nice to see the sky share its splendors around the planet. Nice images you got there too. Thanks! Fred
  6. Hi Dimitri, I wish that I had a meteorite that big in my collection. The biggest one I have is a 7,100.00 gram specimen from Campo del Cielo in Argentina. I should ask if I can locate a display case and bring the whole collection to the meeting in Patras, others may find it of interest. Fred

NGC 281 PacMan Nebula in Cas LRGB 900x1200

Hey Anthony, I compared your image of NGC281 to the one that is displayed in Burnham's Celestial Handbook, Volume I, page 525. The image in the book was taken with the 13-inch telescope, in red light, at Lowell Observatory. Your image shows better detail in the nebula's structure and a few more stars than shown in the Lowell plate. Plus your image is in color and the fact that your image was taken with a CCD camera makes for all the difference in the world. Oh yeah, real nice image that you took. Fred

    Greece from shuttle mission STS-118

Hey, Here's an even better image taken from the shuttle showing most of Greece and it has the ISS in the field too. The hi-res image is located at http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/187230main_s118e09467_hires.jpg Enjoy, Fred

M33 Spiral Galaxy in Triangulum Lum (Test)

Hi Anthony, Well this one came real nice. I too was wondering how much of a difference the AO system would make. I am really curious to see what kind of an impact the new AO system will have image quality once it is in use. Fred
  11. Hi Andrew, Nice shot you got there. I see that you also got Barnards Loop in the shot too-nice. Fred
  12. Hi Elias, Nice image you got there. Almost a 1-minute diameter disk. Having the telescope in the shade is great precaution to take. Keep on imaging... Fred
  13. Hi All, There is a real neat gadget that one can purchase, which you lay on top of your sky atlas, to help locate sky objects in conjunction with the Telrad. One of our club members invented it and information on it can be found at www.actonastro.com if anyone is interested. It is called The Telguide. Steve's invention of the Telrad, a HUD device, is on my top ten list of "must own" items. I think I have three or four of them. If I can ever locate my slide collection, I have a slide of the biggest Telrad made. Steve used it as a "desk" as it was on a stand and one side would open as it was hinged. The large reticle actually worked. I always told him that it would look good on the side of the 200-inch Hale at Mt. Palomar. Naturally, if the Telrad can't be placed in a convenient place on an instrument, then it would be prudent to seek out an alternative. Just remembered that one can also purchase extra base plates for the Telrad and a Dew Shield too. Fred

NGC 7023 - Iris Nebula in Cepheus LRGB 1200x900

Anthony, The image certainly came out looking great. Love the blue colors. -Fred
  15. Hi All, Well, it really all boils down to one question, "what do you want to do". One can have a lifetime of fun with a 6-inch Dobsonian or if one wants to advance beyond that, well, the sky is the limit (along with ones wallet). -Fred

IC 5146 - Cocoon Nebula in Cygnus LRGB 1200x900

Hi Anthony, This image came out real nice too. Lots of stars-I'd hate to have to count them all. -Fred
  17. Wow! That's one great accomplishment you got there guys. Thanks for sharing. -Fred

    Greece from shuttle mission STS-118

Hi Everybody, Yesterday, while going through the current posting of images from the shuttle mission STS-118, old "Eagle Eyes"-that's me, noticed that through the shuttle window to the left of the crew member, one can see part of Attica, Makroniso, Kea, and portions of Kythnos and the lower portions of Euobea along with Petali Island. The direct link to the high resolution image on the NASA web site is... http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/186021main_iss015e22145_hires.jpg and the image number is ISS015-E-22145 taken on August 12, 2007. Below is the low resolution image, but the high resolution image is much better-naturally. Just wanting to share this minor observation with you all. Keep Observing, Fred

NGC 6995/IC1340 SNR in Cyg LRGB 900x1200

Hi Anthony, Well this shot came out real sweet. By chance, are you planning to do a mosaic of the whole Veil complex? I know it is a lot of work, but the result would be...ASTOUNDING! Keep em comng. -Fred

    Another Solar Observing Solution

Hi Frank, I picked up a piece of black foamboard some years back for the exact same purpose. It is an effective way to block the sun while it allows one to observe the sun in the shade. Fred
  22. Hi Andreas, OK, I'll grab one of those bad boys for my t-shirt collection. I like the "hot orange" look. Hey, at least if I ever get lost in the woods Search and Rescue will be able to spot me easily wearing the Astrovox Survival T-shirt. Over and out, -Fred
  23. Looks like everyone had a real nice time. Hope to make it to one of your meets one day. Keep on doing what you are doing and make sure to have lots of fun. -Fred
  24. Hi Elias, Your image also has a link on www.spaceweather.com Just saw it. Real nice image. Fred
  25. Hi Dimitri, One thing that I thought of is that if you are aware that the firm advertises in a British astronomical magazine, you can contact the magazine and inform them that an advertiser of theirs is behaving in a very unbusiness like manner. Perhaps they may be able to intercede on your behalf with a phone call to the firm. If I were a publisher I would certainly not want to carry firms that are disreputable. Also keep all copies of any correspondence that you have and write down any dates that you may make any telephone calls to the firm and the name of the person with whom you spoke with. Hope this may be of some help to you. -Fred
