    Sunspot Observing Form

Here is a sample of the sunspot observing form that was used at the National Observatory of Athens in 1972. With sunspot activity picking up, I thought that some this site viewers might find this to be of interest.

    Jupiter 30-08-2010 UT

Very nice image Dimitri. Looks like the seeing cooperated for you. -Fred
  3. Here is a link to an image of Jupiter taken by an amateur in Australia that happened to have excellent seeing when he took the image. It is at www.spaceweather.com The link to the actual image is at http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/gallery/jupiter/20100830-173830/large.jpg -Fred

    The Moon

Here is a Kodachrome 64 slide of the Moon taken at the prime focus of my Cave 6-inch f/15 refractor. Image was taken in Deember of 1995. The focus is slightly off and the other issue with the Canon A1 camera is the vibration that the shutter induces when it is tripped. In another image, using eyepiece projection, the shaking is noticable. I attempted to focus are carefully as I could, as I did not have any aids to help me.

    Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO)

Hi Papgeo, Yes, it certainly is wonderful that they have installed a new instrument at the observatory. The old equipment was hauled off to make way for the new items. In case you might be interested in viewing the older telescope, go to this link on my site to see a few images that I took. I guess when I go bac home I will have to run up to the lake and see the new telescope. Here is the link... http://www.instrumentsoflight.com/bigbear.html When I saw the image of the sunspot on spaceweather yesterday, I was amazed at the resolution of the image. Can't wait to see new images from the instrument. -Fred
  6. You should have also posted the Clone image too. Now I know what the invading aliens from Gamma Cygnus 5 will look like. Great images. -Fred

Σελήνη - Η πρώτη μου Φωτογραφία

The image looks great for a first attempt. My first attempts did not come out that good, it was a fuzzy Moon. But we all learn as we go forward. -Fred
  10. Ah, a nice tranquil night under the starry dome of the night sky. Recording photons on ones laptop, future image to be posted on Astrovox for all to wonder at. Looks like a great time. -Fred

    Veil Nebula

This came out exceptionally well. I guess we can now sit back and wait for the color image. -Fred
  12. Again, a very nice image. -Fred
  13. That is one very interesting image you have there. I like it, I like it...

    Observing Chair 1

In the above image, there is a long arm that extends downward to the base and has a weight attached to the end. I must conclude that it plays a role in allowing the observer to balance the setup. I didn't meet the owner at the time in order to ask any technical questions. This chair reminds me of Wayne Schmidt, in our local club, who built a chair of this sorts, and mounted two 8-inch Newtonians on it in order to have a "binocular" view of the heavens.
  15. Hi Ourania, The book by Woodbury is a good read, but the the book by Florence is a very in-depth view of the construction of the 200-inch Hale telescope and also has a very nice bibliography. Below is another book about Palomar that I forgot that I had. "Palomar" written by Helen Wright, who also wrote the biography of George E. Hale. It was printed in 1952. The book titled "Ten Years Work On A Mountain Observatory" by George Hale, describes his work at Mt. Wilson Observatory. "Signals To The Stars" by George Hale is one of four books that George Hale wrote. The other three titles are... The Depths Of The Universe The New Heavens Betyond the Milky Way (I don't have this one yet) These were printed in the 1920's. The biography of one other important person is Russel W. Porter. He is regarded as the "father" oof amateur astronomy in the United States. there is a nice read at Wikipedia if interested located at this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Porter The other book that I need to purchase is "Journeyman Machinist." The author seems to have have had an interesting career in the field of astronomy. My apoogies for giving you all this information. I don't know your level of interest pertaining to Palomar Observatory. There was even a postage stamp issued in 1949 to cemmemorate the observatory. Clear Skies, -Fred
  16. Hi Ourania, If you enjoyed the video on Mt. Palomar, you may enjoy these two books about Palomar too. They are out of print, but they can be acquired in a used condition. -Fred

    Observing Chair 1

Here are two images showing a modified Stat Hopper Dobsonian base that has been converted into an observing chair. One can mount a pair of large bincoculars or a short focus refractor and quite possibly a C5. It certainly makes observing zenith objects easier.
  19. Nice looking cloud formation. Reminds me of smome nice clouds that I have photographed too.

    Swedish+solar+telescope

Nice looking instrument. It has taken the best ground based images of the Sun that I have thus far seen.

    Trailer Mounted Observatory 2

The trailer does have leveling stands on its four corners which should work just fine. I would conclude that if one were in there taking a time exposure, slow movement would be advised as recordeing devices are so sensitive to vibrations. I have a few more images of this observatory, but just decided to place a few on the site.

    Observe In Comfort

I don't blame you. You have your observatory, hotel, kitchen, etc. in one convenient place. Of course it took some work to modify the trailer, but the end result is worth the time and money spent.

    Size Comparison

A good sturdy ladder is definitely needed to observe with this telescope-that is for cartain.
  24. Looks like a nice place to visit. The telescope looks like a DFM. I guess 1.2-meters is about 50 inches or so. I should visit Crete again to go and check out the observatory in addition to the ruins.
