    9-inch Folded Refractor

    A 9-inch folded refractor on a Springfield mount. Kodachrome 64 slide at the 1997 RTMC.
  2. Vasilis, I forgot to mention that a person that the Durrell's met in Corfu and who became a very close family friend is Dr. Theodore Stephanides. He opened up the first X-ray lab in Corfu and also did some amateur astronomy back then. Further interesting information on him can be found on Wiikipedia at this link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Alexander and this link is interesting too... http://www.shoarns.com/TheodoreStephanides.html I first visited Corfu in 1964 with my parents. I remember putting in two drachmas in a slot machine at the casino and won back fifty drachmas. Mind you I was only seven at the time. Again, in 1972 with a school trip over Easter break. The last time was with my daughter in August of 1995. If I had the funds, I would love to buy a small old house with a garden in Corfu. I could read and paint during the day, throw in some swimming too and observe at night and we must not forget the bbq. Of course there is always something interesting happening in town or elsewhere on the island. -Fred
  3. Hi Vasilis, I am aware of the bombing of Corfu town during World War II by the Germans. I could never figure out the what the great military importance of Corfu town was. It is a shame that the belfry has been allowed to reach the condition it is in. I hope that the city is aware of this and will be prompted to take action before it is to late. You may want to take it upon yourself to photograoh the belfry from all angles just to have photographic record of it. Corfu town has many charming old buildings of interest. The island overall is a very wonderful place to live or visit. One of my favorite authors, Gerald Durrell, lived in Corfu for some years as a child and had to leave because of the blasted war. He wrote three books about his living on the island and they are very refreshing to read and nostalgic. Anyhow, thanks for posting the photograph. -Fred
  4. Very interesting photograph and piece of history. I gather that the church is in Greece. Could you tell me as to where it is located? Thanks! -Fred

    ΠΡΟΒΛΗΜΑ ΜΕ LX200

    The LX200 manual recommends that the two stars used for alignment have a minimum spacing of 90-degrees. This is stated as being the minimum in order to achieve a good setup. -Fred

    15-inch Cassegrain

    I am not certain, but a good guess for those days would be that it takes plate film.

    Astro-Tech 6" f/9 Ritchey-Chrétien Astrograph

    As you know, the hard part which raises the cost of the R-C system is the figuring of the secondary. I wish that they were cheaper-then I'd get one too. Naturally they are an excellent choice for astrophotography. Ritchie wanted to have R-C optics installed on the 200-inch at Palomar. So he eventually ended up in disagreement with George Hale over the that. Hale was the director and practically always got the final word in and thus the 200-inch does not have an R-C configuration. I have not come any reports about the 6-inch AstroTech. will have to look for it. -Fred

    Meade 16-inch

    Some people found that the tube, which was made out of a neavy paper, fell apart after while. I believe that there were some issues in humid climates. It certainly was a lot of telescope for the money back then. It was quite heavy too. -Fred
  10. Corfu at night and with star trails. Nice! -Fred

    Meade 16-inch

    The 16-mirror was a thin mirror. Here is a page from the 1992 Meade catalog. Hmmm... seems that I can not add an image to this post. Ah-got it! I'll add the page to my personal album. Take a look there. Here is the link... http://www.astrovox.gr/forum/album.php?user_id=4

    Worm και worm wheel ;

    Yes, the Cam-Track is a nice little unit. Always thought that it would be nice to own one. Havn't ever seen one, but they look really nice in the literature. I was wondering as what your project is. I gather that you have a mount but just need to get the worm and gear to make it all happen. -Fred

    Worm και worm wheel ;

    It just dawned on me that I forgot a maker of high quality worms and gears-Ed Byers. He has been making gears and worms since the early 70's from what I can readily recall. His gears are worth keeping for a lifetime. He doesn't have a web page but he can be reached over in Barstow. Here is his contact information... Ed Byers 29001 West Highway 58 Barstow, California 92311 United States Telephone (760) 256-2377 Fax (760) 256-9599 -Fred Here is the cover to his catalog from 1997 or there abouts.

    Hi, You could try Boston Gear, they have been around since the 1800's. Here is a link to their section on worms and worm gears... http://bostongear.com/products/open/worms.html# Hope this helps. -Fred
  19. Very nice, I guess that we should bring some apples with us whenever observing at Mt. Kiteron. I wonder if the donkey reacted to the sudden flash. Has this donkey appeared in another photo on this site? I recall an image of a donkey being posted some time ago. -Fred

    Γυαλί Pyrex

    Hi Argyrhs, The place that readily come to mind is Newport Optical located in Stanton in southern California. They sell glass for Newtonians, refractor kits, all of the abrasives, etc. They have mirror kits from 4.25-inches up to 18-inches. Their 8-inch mirror kit comes in two types and prices. One is just a flat piece of pyrex and the other has a machine generated f/8 curve to the optical surface, saving a bit of grinding time. Here is the link to the site. http://www.newportglass.com/ The other day I checked on a 20-inch mirror blank and the price quoted was $1,375.00. Thats not bad considering the current buying power of the Dollar. Anyhow, hope this is of some help. -Fred
