  1. Another comet is coming up to the plate. Have a look for comet McNaught in the early morning. Here's a chart to help you: http://spaceweather.com/images2007/05jan07/skymap_north.gif

  6. Here is a telescope that was recently purchased by one of the members in our club. We looked at Saturn on Saturday night and the views were quite impressive. Antares is a Canadian Based Company they guarantee 1/6 wave optics on their 8" 10" + 12" Reflectors. http://www.maisonastronomie.ca/maison/eng/cadreeng.htm "Le fabricant Canadien nous propose sa nouvelle gamme de telescope type Dobson. Déclinée en 3 modeles (8", 10", 12"). Miroir 8" (204 mm) F/D 6. Optique garantie 1/6 d'onde. Chercheur 9x50 coude, porte-oculaire 1 1/4" et 2", livre avec 2 oculaires 9mm et 32mm Super Plossl. Moonrise Over Zakynthos - August 2006

Here is a shot that was taken this summer during our stay in Zakynthos. I did not have my tripod with me so the image was taken by holding the camera firmly against the side of a wall. - Frank

    Questar 7" - Loaded

Hey Fred, Perhaps the pinacle of optical perfection, these 7" versions have an excellent track record - their optics are second to none - certainly at seven inches we have enough aperture to start doing some serious work - Still waiting for the opportunity to test one of these legendary telescopes under the night sky. I have never seen the 12-inch version though I suspect their price tags must be Astronomical. -Frank

    Questar 7" - Loaded

Here is a Loaded Questar 7" on display at the NEAF Astronomy Forum. We observed the fine details of a serial number on a light fixture about 100meteres away. Wonderful Instrument!!

  11. I'd like to point out that Don has an article in the Jan 2007 Sky & Telescope about processing planetary images. He has some good suggestions for using Registax, and also describes his general processing workflow, including using tools like MaxIm DL for part of it. There's some good stuff here!

    Beautiful Image: http://www.buytelescopes.com/gallery/view_photo.asp?pid=10543 Enjoy!!
  18. Space Weather News for Oct. 25, 2006 http://spaceweather.com COMET OUTBURST: Astronomers report that Comet Swan has suddenly increased in brightness 4-fold, from magnitude +6 to +4.5. This makes it a naked-eye object in dark skies and a lovely sight through backyard telescopes. The cause of the outburst: A new vein of volatile ice may have opened up in the comet's nucleus. Solar heating transforms this freshly-exposed material into streams of bright, reflective gas and dust. Indeed, backyard telescopes seem to show new tendrils of gaseous material in the comet's long tail. Visit http://spaceweather.com for sky maps, images and more information.

    odservatory sakis

Looks like a great setup SAKIS. Perhaps I missed your post but where are you located? Are you somewhere in or near the city? -Frank
  20. This is a Coronado custom made telescope. Much detail has gone into this scope and as you mentioned, even the focuser is custom made. The supplied focuser is very similar (if not the same) - this one gives a more cosmetically uniform look to the scope (overall) . The double-aperture is usually through an internal 400 etalon at the end of the focus as to not reduce aperture. This is very expensive and is only done at Coronado. I believe the 90mm scope is done this way with a 60mm internal etalon to double its effectiveness - again this is quite expensive. Cheers. - Frank
  21. This photo is of a Coronado 70mm that was specialy double-stacked - This is a 70mm that we have with a 60mm stack. Still it had to be modified, (by Coronado at their facilities) and it is now effectively a 60mm scope. Price is approx $6,000 US. Many people opt for the internal double-stacking as this does NOT reduce aperture.

    Solarmax 70

Evans, I just found and uploaded a picture of a Coronado 70mm doublestacked (externally) with a 60mm - see: Τηλεσκόπια και Εξοπλισμός Enjoy.

    Solarmax 70

Evans, this is different question. 1) - Answer to your original question is Yes, it can be doublestacked. I'm not sure though, if double stacking that instrument can be done with absolutely no reduction of it's aperture(70mm). i think that <0.5pass views for that scope can only be delivered through a 60mm filter(the reduction i was talking about...), I hope i'm wrong!!! So, my question is that if there's any possibility of having that scope double stacked keeping it's plenty of aperture!! 2)- Because Coronado ONLY sells 40mm 60mm + 90mm filters you have no choice but to install the smaller 60mm on the Solarmax 70. Unless of course you want to install the 90mm over the 70mm, thus retaining your full 70mm aperture. Check your wallet and see if this 90mm solution is worth the extra $$$. I believe all SolarMax include a T-Max de-tuning filter Our club owns the Solarmax 70 which is used at full Aperture (70mm) and gives us a bandpass of <0.8 angstroms. A member in our club owns a TAK 130mm and uses the Coronado 90mm filter which gives him a Bandwidth of <0.7 angstroms. For more technical data check here: http://www.coronadofilters.com/

    Solarmax 70

Evans, Yes, absolutely it can be doublestacked, it would be <5 pass, super for surface details, very crispy. Problem: $3,000 USD! -
